Telsy is working for the planet

Plastic is a term derived from the Latin “plasticus”, an evolution of the Greek term “plastikos”, that was used to describe something capable of being easily modelled. Today “plastics” or “plastic materials” are the terms used to describe an extremely large family of very different materials with different characteristics, properties and uses, that with the actual increased production and everyday usage are now heavily contributing in damaging our planet.

A quarter of the plastic waste produced is released into nature every year and 600,000 tonnes end up polluting the Mediterranean Sea. It’s the equivalent of roughly 563 plastic bottles being dumped into the Mediterranean Sea every second.

The root cause of plastic pollution is found in the delays and gaps in plastic waste management. In fact, out of the 27 million tonnes of plastic waste produced each year in Europe, only a third is recycled.

Telsy is a company committed to contribute in the creation of a sustainable world, and is starting the changing from inside by equipping the employees with steel re-usable bottles and recycled notebooks, continuously promoting environmental education as a first step towards a plastic free workplace.

The improvement of internal recycling programs and staff education on the value of the 3 R’s of Sustainability (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) represents the best practice to contribute in tackling climate change starting from the productive side of the recycling chain, the workplace. In fact, redesigning company’s infrastructure by adopting office policies to halt single use plastic products and promote a plastic-free working environment is the best way to secure our future and be part of the changing.

Europe is the second largest plastics producer in the world, after China, dumping 500,000 tonnes of macroplastics and 130,000 tonnes of microplastics in the sea every year. This plastic waste kills wildlife, contaminates food chains, and increasingly is ingested by people from food and drinking water. The urgency is undeniable: large plastic pieces injure, suffocate and often kill marine animals, including protected and endangered species. Moreover, the microplastics, smaller and more insidious fragments, are entering the food chain threatening an increased number of animal species as well as human health.

This is the reason why Telsy is continuously investing in innovation for recyclable and sustainable alternatives to tackle of unrecyclable plastic packaging by adopting renewably sourced feedstocks. In fact, when we recycle, used materials are converted into new products reducing the need to consume natural resources. If used materials are not recycled, new products are made by extracting fresh, raw materials from the earth, through mining and forestry. Telsy’s choice to reduce the use of plastic is part of the new corporate strategy based on the creation of economic and social value towards the concept of Corporate Shared Value.
